A big night of Halloween fun for kids in Jefferson

ToTSquare 1Jefferson’s Halloween Triple Crown Thursday was a huge success despite the cold weather.

The annual event, always the Thursday before Halloween, is coordinated by the Jefferson park and recreation department, the Greene County Chamber of Commerce and the Jefferson public library.

About 160 children registered for the free Halloween party at the Community Center. With the help of the Greene County High School Interact Club, children could pick from a wide variety of activities including the Lim-Bone, putting body parts (ping pong balls) back in a zombie, and pumpkin bowling.

Donating treats for the party were Absolute Therapeutic Massage, Ben Franklin, Bomgaars, Breadeaux Pizza, Bunkers Dunkers Casey’s General Store, Dairy Queen, Deal’s Orchard, Fareway, GreeneCountyNewsOnline, Home State Bank, Hy-Vee, Jefferson Telecom, MacDonald Insurance, McAtee Tire and Service Inc, Peoples Trust & Savings Bank, Pizza Ranch, State Farm Insurance, Subway and Wells Fargo Bank.

Trick-or-Treat Around the Square followed the party. Downtown merchants and other Chamber members report more than 600 children did the trick-or-treat ritual around the courthouse square. Jefferson Matters: Main Street, Thomas Jefferson Gardens, the Masons, the VFW/American Legion and APE Charity also got into to the fun.

Trick Trick Alyssa ManriquezAlyssa Manriquez won the older age category that amazed even the adults in the audience.

The Jefferson public library staff and volunteers offered their version of ““Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Book?” by Lauren Child. Avery Bardole played the part of Herb, a naughty boy who hadn’t been very kind to his books. In a dream he met the king and queen on whose faces he had drawn mustaches, Cinderella’s stepmother, who had been hanging upside down since Herb tore out the page and taped it back in upside down, and others. Other members of the Library Fairy Tale Crew were Jerry Roberts, Mike Piepel, Teresa Shahan, Stacie Clark, Shirley Stapleton, Kayce Riphage, Robert and Lorene Hemping, Carrie Boude, Laura Ballard and Laura Clark.
